Time to Meet South Beach’s New Maki Mecca

Description

When it comes to South Beach, not much surprises you anymore.

Not even the massive raccoon-dog hybrid you’ll be having dinner with.

Stick with us here…

Because you’re about to meet Tanuki, the first stateside location of the maki, sake and shisha wunderkind, soft-open now in South Beach.

Believe it or not, these guys actually come to us via—wait for it—Moscow. Naturally, they’ve chosen our city to debut their fancy new Pan-Asian concept. Which is good news for you and the temaki aficionado you’ve made dinner plans with. Because they’ve got that.

You’ll step into an airy space with reclaimed-barn-wood walls and steel beams. And yes, that’s a giant statue of a raccoon-dog hybrid presiding over the on-goings of the dining room. That’s a tanuki. Apparently it’s a talisman of good fortune. Listen… whatever works.

To one side of the wraparound LED bar: an open kitchen, alive with promises of robata-grilled meats and truffled yellowtail maki and Peking duck soba. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here—back to the bar. With all its popcorn rum, wasabi-infused mezcal and smoked coconut cream at its disposal until 2am, drinking will be an equal priority.

And after your maki feast: shisha. It’s available pretty much every single night.

Surgeon generals be damned.
