The Mandarin Oriental is pretty much exactly where a visitor wants to be in Singapore — right in the Marina Bay area with all its shopping, restaurants, and nightlife, five minutes from the business district, a short cab ride from the tony stores of Orchard Road, and adjacent to the Marina Square Shopping Mall and Suntec City, one of Asia Pacific’s largest convention centers. And despite the hotel’s moderate height, the location provides excellent views of the harbor, the sea, and the skyline.
The vibe here is a little subdued and conservative, but a recent renovation left it comfortable and modern. The pool is grand, with underwater lounge chairs and plenty of cabanas. Service is impeccable, as is the case with any Mandarin Oriental, and those with access to the Oriental lounge enjoy the perks of free champagne breakfast, afternoon tea, and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the evening. When guests tire of checking out the nearby restaurant scene and the city’s famous street hawker fare, they can try one of the hotel’s many restaurants, including an Italian spot, a Cantonese restaurant, a Morton’s steakhouse, and more.
