Description

The Yankees are going to be a better baseball team than the Mets this year. It’s just one of those eras. They will not, however, be better at breweries.

That’s because Mikkeller Brewing NYC, a food-serving, sports-loving, 10,000-square-foot version of the beloved Danish brewery is opening at Citi Field on Sunday.

It’s not often you find an excuse to make your way out to a major sports venue just to eat and drink, but this is one such occasion. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, the man behind Mikkeller, laid his first roots in America in Northern California, where the brand has four spots (others are scattered around the world). He’s also the implied good twin to brother Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø’s evil twin of Evil Twin Brewing, who also owns Törst in Greenpoint. The two don’t work together, but, on the chance you haven’t gotten ahold of Mikkeller anywhere else in the city, consider Törst a loose reference for the beer quality you can expect.

The brewery (take a look around here) is open to non-Mets game goers and has 60 beers on tap, including a couple brewed specifically for Citi Field—a pilsner called Say Hey Sally and an IPA by the name of Henry Hops. The lineup will change weekly and be poured via top-of-the-line tap technology, naturally.

As for things to wash down, Claus Meyer‘s doing a pork sandwich (with raw apple, pickled red cabbage, gherkins, parsley pork cracklings, Dijon dressing on an Oland roll), which we’ll go out on a limb and say makes Citi Field the most Nordic stadium in all of Major League Baseball. You’ve also got bulgogi fries from Unidentified Flying Chicken and a cheesesteak from Whitmans, among other more ballpark-friendly options (menu here).

All of this should greatly alleviate the pain of being 20 games back of the Nats in July.

Opening Sunday, Mikkeller Brewing NYC at Citi Field, 126th St at 38th Ave (between the Bullpen and Right Field gates), Queens, see the menu and the slideshow
