Can’t get along in this city without shoes.

Don’t even try.

It’s part of the whole “If you can make it here…” trope. Got to have shoes for that.

And that being the case, they might as well be some very handsome ones.

Enter—no, really, enter—M.Gemi, a previously online shoe operation now brought into physical existence and bringing with it a bar. It opens Monday in SoHo.

When you do enter, you’ll note that the whole place is peculiarly attractive for a shoe store, in that it’s lit largely by a massive skylight and it has a bar full of liquor and pastries and that water you like so much with the cucumbers. And, obviously, many attractive things meant to enhance your pedal status.

So take a seat on the couch and breathe it all in for a couple minutes, and then get down to it. On the north side you’ll find the men’s stuff. Among the winners are a series of dress classics, a deep-burgundy high-top sneaker and one of the lightest suede boots you’re likely to find, in olive, no less. Fall, thy name is the Piega. All of these are made in the nation of Italy.

They frequently come out with new models, so be on the lookout for that. And over on the women’s side, they release a new limited-edition pair every week and are rolling out custom driving slippers.

And aside from having a cocktail and purchasing footwear, the thing you’ll want to do is pick up a belt. A custom belt. Maybe a black calfskin one that they’ll then cut on the spot for you, at the belt-cutting table up front.

No place for cutting belts like a belt-cutting table.
