All are among the fake awards we might award this place, if we were in the mood to give some fake awards. It’s called Oxomoco, and it’s a gorgeous new space for interesting tacos and flower-topped cocktails and consuming both in a bright, summer-y space, opening tomorrow in Greenpoint.
It’s the Speedy Romeo chef’s first foray into Mexican, after mastering the whole wood-fired pizza thing over the past couple years. And he’s calling this spot wood-fired Mexican: with techniques borrowed from Speedy, it’s a menu full of marinated grilled meats, charred vegetables and smokey flavors.
You’ll come with friends, a date, whatever, on a sunny day in the not-far-off future. You want to take advantage of the front patio and/or inside space with massive skylights drenching the space in light. It’s a Summer 2018 vibe here: a once-warehouse sort of space now flush with plants, caramel-colored booths and soft, glowing yellow lights. A solid and refreshing playlist, too (we heard some new A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean while there).
Anywhere’s a good seat, so sit literally anywhere, and enjoy a couple of mezcal cocktails to start. The Hue Hue’s their take on an old-fashioned—the name means “ancient” in Nahuatl, the Aztec language—and it’s a damn tasty mixture of bourbon, mezcal, smoked mole and fernet. When it comes time to fill your table with some sustenance, a couple musts: the hamachi rhubarb agua chile with candied ginger; the chicken al pastor tacos with grilled pineapple and the Insta-worthy fluke with avocado-basil salsa.
