Basically, these sommeliers pick the best wines from all over the globe. Then they send them to you… a glass at a time. That way, you get exactly what you want, as opposed to being stuck with a mediocre bottle of wine all night. The horror.
I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM
Hello. Tartine Manufactory now has an ice-cream-making operation. It’s soft-serve made from water buffalo milk and it comes in flavors like dark chocolate and Ethiopian coffee. You can top it with housemade granola and marshmallows, or get it in a pie. An ice cream pie. Just seemed like you’d want to know about that.
FORAGE AHEAD
You find yourself in Uptown Oakland. You’re hungry. A sandwich sounds nice. Preferably one with Lao-style sausage or Kobe roast beef. You stumble upon the new Forage Kitchen Café, where sandwiches from Pal’s Take Away and food-centric events also exist. You become overjoyed. Story’s over.
SUPPER CLUB
You’ll recall ’Āina, that gem of a Hawaiian brunch spot in the Dogpatch. Well, it’s got dinner now. Meaning you can feast upon binchotan-charred octopus and smoked char siu pork ribs while drinking white port right this very moment. Or better yet, later, once they actually open for dinner.
MONK’D
There are Halloween parties, and then there are Halloween parties with karaoke and a La Palma taco bar. This one, happening Saturday at Laughing Monk and featuring their new Oakdale Pumpkin Ale, is the latter kind. Feels like we probably didn’t need to specify that.
SMOKE ’EM IF YOU GOT ’EM
Monday happens to be Halloween. More importantly, it’s the launch of Mezcal Mondays at Calavera, during which five mezcal producers will pour tastes of their wares while you drink them and casually enjoy Latin music out on their patio. Oh, and it’s a masquerade party. Twist.
Lauren Sloss requires a climate that allows her to wear motorcycle boots daily. She likes her bourbon neat and her martinis dirty, and would like to be the lead singer of a punk rock band when she grows up.
