Description

Weekend getaway to Key West.

Weekend getaway to Cuba.

Notice how these phrases no longer have question marks.

Now that Havana Cabana in Key West is taking reservations, and you can technically do both in the same weekend.

Formerly the Inn at Key West, this hotel remained closed after Irma. Until Monday, anyway, when it reopens as the ultimate homage to Havana.

For starters, there’s that ’57 Chevy parked in front. Go ahead, snap a pic for your Instagram and inquire about renting it just to tool around Key West for the day. Then file into the 106-room hotel lobby, where the sound of Spanish guitars fills your ears and the scent of Cuban pastries awakens your tastebuds. You’re going to like it here.

Especially after checking in and beelining straight to the pool, the largest in Key West, complete with what’s called the Mojito Pool Bar. Twenty-five versions of Cuba’s legendary rum cocktail exist here. And it’s open late so you can continue experimenting.

You’ll luxuriate for as many days as you like among the tropical foliage and crystal waters of the pool. Studying the expertly mashed leaves in your drink and its harmonious coexistence with a Cuban sandwich from the Floridita truck.

But if somehow this isn’t enough to make you feel the Havana vibes, head back to the lobby and let the concierge book a day trip to the real Havana, where you’ll lunch in a historic fishing village that Hemingway passed many a day in.

Which bodes well for more mojitos.
