Nightlife

By Hadley Tomicki ·

Your Tuesday: Beer, fireworks and some guy in a stars-and-stripes top hat temporarily threatening to block said fireworks.

Your Wednesday: Completely not that.

It’ll be a more civilized affair at the San Fernando, a quite handsome, faintly 1940’s-inflected cocktail spot with a side of good food and live music, opening Wednesday in Glendale.

It looks the way bars should look. With an attractive, extensive surface at which to order draft beers and handmade cocktails. And vintage train signs discretely delivering atmosphere. And a lonely corner piano begging for some world-weary troubadour to tickle its keys.

Come see for yourself sometime. Join a motley crew of neighbors, Metrolink riders, Golden Road Brewery evacuees and AWOL Disney animators for happy hour, a nightcap or something in between.

Begin with a W.C. Fields (rye, black cherry balsamic, housemade strawberry syrup and cherry bitters) before joining your friends at their teak table, loaded with fried mac and cheese balls and pork belly Cubanos.

And you may be in luck and find yourself here on jazz night. Or maybe you’ll find some talented singer-songwriter hitting the stage. Or perhaps you’ll appear for rhythm and blues night.

Think Sam Cooke R&B. Not Color Me Badd R&B.
