Description

Your eyeballs can’t speak.

Nor do they have heads to tilt suggestively at places they’d like you to take them.

So on their behalf, allow us to suggest Garrett Leight California Optical, a little nook of a shop filled with fine-looking spectacles, open now on Hayes. (Here’s what it looks like.)

You know Garrett Leight. Son of the founder of Oliver Peoples and all-around prince of the eyewear world. Well, this is his first outpost in our fair city, and it’s every bit as white, bright and modern as its LA counterparts.

Once inside, pass the succulents and L-shaped leather banquette, turn left and land before the wall of classic frames. Look up, and you’ll find an array of sort-of-timeless, sort-of-retro-looking frames: the Kinney. The Hampton. The Milwood (they’re all named after streets in Venice, where Sir Leight hails from).

You’ve got more than 500 frames to choose from. Each comes in optical or sunglass form—but if you walk a bit further back, you’ll find ready-made sunglasses for your trying-on pleasure.

They’ve also got some made-in-San-Francisco glasses inspired by Allen Ginsberg that come with a Kerouac quote. And glasses from a Mark McNairy collaboration that do not.

Because that would make less sense.
